Variations to alleviating the blocklike quality of concrete | “Concrete and Friends” project
In our material combination experiment we investigated the possibilities of creating forms that can be used to alleviate and lessen the block-like rigidity of concrete. For the series of casting we used the lost wax process used in metal arts. Objects were made of wax prisms and spheres, and after casting, the wax was melted out to reveal the negative spaces in the concrete.
Following another method, the student created a random, openwork structure with small, airborne balloons. The most intuitive part of the form experiments was the reversed way of thinking, that is, constructing the negative of the positive. At the end of the material combination experiment series, coral-like structures built from wax rods were cast from concrete, where the mold was a sand block.
